Awake

Hugh carried me to the shower and bathed me. He washed my hair and face and tended my skin. I desperately needed the loo after but couldn’t ask.

“You look pained.” He squeezed my hair with a towel. “You need to tell me what it is.”

“I need to be on my own.”

He frowned and stepped back. “I apologise.” It was the first vulnerability I’d seen from him.

“No, I meant… It’s private, you know. Anal.” My face burnt.

“Oh,” he bit his lip. “Look, it can be embarrassing, but it doesn’t faze me at all. You can’t be squeamish when butt stuff is involved.” He gave me a mock serious look, and I burst out laughing.

He grinned and eyes sparkled. “I think that’s the first time I’ve seen you laugh.”

I stopped laughing but still smiled. “You’re the first person to make me laugh in a while.”

He kissed my forehead. “I’ll tidy up.”

I was so relieved when he left, but the absence was keen.
